The Indigenous Postgraduate Summer School is a residential Summer School for Indigenous postgraduate research students. The five-day program is open to Indigenous research degree students and their supervisors from universities across Australia. It is designed to assist students in the areas of refining research questions, research methodology, research approaches, ethical practices, as well as writing and publishing skills. The benefits for Indigenous students also include the opportunity to interact with other students, to form supportive and collegial networks, and to interact with and learn from experienced academics and researchers.
The Summer School is hosted by the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) and the University of Melbourne through the office of Professor Marcia Langton, Chair of Indigenous Studies. Academy Fellows Professor Ruth Fincher, Professor Ian Anderson and Profesor Langton are the co-directors, and Indigenous and non-Indigenous academics from a number of universities contribute their time to teach and mentor students. Visit the faculty list on this website. So far the Summer School has been held at University of Melbourne's Ormond College (2002 & 2004) and Trinity College (2005 & 2006).
The Summer School is supported by the Department of Education Science and Training's Indigenous Education Strategic Initiatives Program, the Cooperative Reserch Centre Aboriginal Helath, as well as donations and scholarships from the University of Melbourne, Pratt Foundation, Hecht Foundation, Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation, CSIRO, and Newmont Australia.
